What Are Type IIa Diamonds?

Diamonds are classified into Type I and Type II categories based on their chemical composition:

  • Type I diamonds (~98% of all diamonds): Contain nitrogen impurities, which can cause yellow or brown coloration.
  • Type II diamonds (~2% of all diamonds): Contain virtually no nitrogen. Chemically pure carbon.

Type II diamonds are further divided into:

  • Type IIa: No nitrogen, no boron. Absolutely colorless (if no other defects are present).

  • FL clarity: Less than 0.5% of all gem-quality diamonds.
  • IF clarity: Approximately 1-2% of all gem-quality diamonds.
  • VVS1-VVS2: Approximately 5-8% of all gem-quality diamonds.

Why Cut Is the Most Important of the 4Cs

Here's the truth that the industry doesn't always emphasize: a poorly cut D-IF diamond will look worse than a well-cut G-VS2 diamond.

Cut quality determines:

  • Brilliance: The amount of white light reflected back to the eye.
  • Fire: The dispersion of light into spectral colors.
  • Scintillation: The pattern of light and dark areas, and the flashes of light as the diamond moves.
