Researchers estimate that only a few hundred natural blue diamonds of notable size and saturation exist anywhere in the world — the Natural Color Diamond Association puts it memorably: for every hundred Picasso paintings sold at auction, a single natural blue diamond comes to market. Their color most often comes from trace amounts of boron within the crystal structure — the defining feature of Type IIb diamonds, the purest and most scientifically fascinating category. Rarer natural blues can also arise from radiation or hydrogen-related defects.

The Science of Blue

Blue diamonds derive their color from boron atoms that replace carbon atoms during formation. Boron has one fewer electron than carbon, and the uncompensated boron atoms absorb light from the infrared into the red end of the visible spectrum; what is transmitted reads as blue. The same electronic structure makes these diamonds semi-conductive — a property unique among gemstones that can be measured and verified — and many phosphoresce after exposure to ultraviolet light: the Hope Diamond famously glows red for several seconds.

The boron concentration required to produce visible color is remarkably small — typically around one boron atom per million carbon atoms — yet this trace amount is sufficient to create the extraordinary blue coloration that makes these diamonds so prized.

Superdeep Diamonds and Ancient Oceans

Boron is abundant at the Earth's surface but almost absent at the depths where diamonds grow, and for decades no one could explain how it found its way into these crystals. A 2018 study led by GIA and published in Nature answered the question by examining tiny mineral inclusions trapped inside Type IIb diamonds. Those minerals form only at extreme pressure, placing the diamonds' birth at least in the mantle transition zone, 410–660 kilometers down, and possibly in the lower mantle beyond — roughly four times deeper than the 150–200 kilometers at which most diamonds form.

The inclusions also showed the diamonds grew in the presence of subducted ocean crust. As tectonic plates descend like a conveyor belt into the deep Earth, they carry seawater, carbon, and boron with them. The boron in a blue diamond may therefore have begun its journey in an ancient ocean, been dragged hundreds of kilometers into the mantle, incorporated into a growing crystal, and finally carried back to the surface by a kimberlite eruption. Blue diamonds are not found wherever diamonds are mined; they appear only where these deepest geological processes align.

Type IIb Classification

Most natural blue diamonds — the classic, unmodified blues that make up the majority GIA examines — are Type IIb, colored by trace boron, and represent roughly 0.1% of all natural diamonds. Boron is the most familiar cause of blue, but not the only one: GIA also recognizes rarer blue-to-greenish-blue diamonds colored by natural radiation, and gray-blue to gray-violet stones colored by hydrogen-related defects. Geographic Origins

Natural blue diamonds are found in only a handful of locations worldwide, almost all of them in southern Africa:

Cullinan Mine, South Africa — The primary source of blue diamonds today. Cullinan produced the 29.62-carat rough that became the Blue Moon, the rough for the De Beers Cullinan Blue, and in January 2026 Petra Diamonds announced the recovery of a 41.82-carat blue of exceptional color and clarity — one of the most important blue diamond discoveries ever made.

Orapa Mine, Botswana — Source of the Okavango Blue, a 41.11-carat rough recovered in 2018 and polished into a 20.46-carat Fancy Deep Blue oval, now a symbol of Botswana's diamond industry.

Golconda Region, India — Historical source of many famous blue diamonds including the Hope and the Wittelsbach. These ancient deposits are exhausted but remain legendary for producing stones of unsurpassed quality.

Argyle Mine, Australia — Prior to its closure in 2020, Argyle occasionally produced blue, violet, and gray-blue stones, though these owe their color to hydrogen rather than boron and were rarely large. The mine is chiefly remembered for its pink diamonds.

The extreme geological specificity required for boron-blue formation means new sources are unlikely to be discovered, making existing stones increasingly precious.
