Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most from collectors, investors, and those beginning their journey into rare diamonds.

Are rare diamonds a good investment?

Historical data shows investment-grade colored diamonds have appreciated consistently over the past decade: Fancy Vivid pinks at 15-20% annually, Fancy Vivid blues at 10-15%, and Fancy Vivid yellows at 6-10%. Type IIa colorless diamonds (5+ carats) have appreciated 8-12% annually. However, like all alternative assets, diamonds should represent a modest portion (typically 2-5%) of a diversified portfolio and be viewed as long-term holdings (5-10+ years) for optimal value realization.

How do different colors compare for investment?

Pink diamonds have shown the strongest appreciation (15-20% annually) driven by the Argyle mine closure eliminating 90% of supply. Blue diamonds command the highest per-carat prices but have limited market data due to extreme rarity. Yellow diamonds offer better liquidity and lower entry points, making them ideal for portfolio building. Many investors hold 50-60% in yellow for liquidity, with the remainder in pink and blue for higher appreciation potential.

What size diamond should I consider?

Size recommendations vary by color and objective. For blue diamonds: minimum 1.0 carat for investment. For pink: minimum 0.50 carats, with 1.00+ offering optimal liquidity. For yellow: minimum 1.00 carat, with 2.00-5.00 carats as the sweet spot. Larger stones show strongest appreciation but require higher capital and longer marketing periods at eventual sale. For jewelry, smaller sizes in high color grades offer excellent visual impact.

How long does it take to sell a rare diamond?

Through major auction houses (Christie's, Sotheby's, Bonhams), the process typically takes 3-6 months from consignment to sale. Private sales through dealer networks can be faster (1-4 months) but may require price flexibility. Fancy Intense and Vivid grades in the 0.50-5.00 carat range show the fastest liquidity. Our resale support services assist clients with both channels.

How do I verify a diamond is genuine and natural?

Every diamond must be certified by GIA with no treatment disclosure on the report. The GIA report can be verified online at GIA.edu using the unique report number. For blue diamonds, Type IIb designation confirms natural origin. For Argyle pinks, original Argyle certificates provide additional provenance verification. We provide additional spectroscopy documentation and lifetime authenticity guarantees on every diamond we sell.

What is the difference between natural and treated diamonds?

Natural fancy color diamonds derive their color from geological processes during formation — boron for blue, nitrogen for yellow, plastic deformation for pink. Treated diamonds are lower-grade stones subjected to HPHT (high pressure, high temperature), irradiation, or coating to create or enhance color. Treated stones are worth 60-95% less than natural equivalents. GIA reports clearly indicate any treatment detected. We sell only natural, untreated diamonds.

What is Type IIa / Type IIb and why does it matter?

Type IIa diamonds contain virtually no nitrogen — the purest diamond crystal structure, representing less than 2% of all diamonds. Type IIa adds 15-25% premiums for colorless diamonds and provides superior optical properties. Type IIb diamonds contain boron, creating blue color — all natural blue diamonds are Type IIb. Type Ib diamonds contain isolated nitrogen, creating the most intense yellow colors — Zimmi diamonds are the finest examples.

Why do you only accept GIA certification?

GIA maintains the most conservative and consistent grading standards in the industry. Other laboratories may grade 1-2 color grades more leniently, artificially inflating value by 20-40%. GIA certificates command the highest resale prices (10-20% premium over other labs), are universally accepted globally, and possess the most advanced treatment detection capabilities. Should I prioritize Argyle-certified pink diamonds?

Argyle-certified pink diamonds currently command 20-40% premiums over comparable non-Argyle stones, and this gap is widening since the mine's permanent closure in 2020. For investment-focused purchases, Argyle provenance adds significant value preservation. For jewelry-focused purchases, non-Argyle stones can offer better value if color and quality meet your standards.

What is a "canary" diamond?

"Canary diamond" is an informal term for yellow diamonds with exceptional color purity and saturation — typically Fancy Vivid or high Fancy Intense with no secondary modifiers. True canary diamonds command 20-40% premiums. All canary diamonds are yellow diamonds, but not all yellow diamonds are canary diamonds.

What makes Zimmi diamonds special?

Zimmi diamonds are pure Type Ib yellow diamonds from Sierra Leone — the only consistent source of this extraordinarily rare nitrogen configuration. They command 1.5-2× premiums over other Fancy Vivid yellows due to unmatched color saturation, scientific rarity (only 0.8% of yellows are Type Ib), and a unique geological history spanning 650 million years.

What is "plastic deformation" in pink diamonds?

Plastic deformation refers to permanent changes in a diamond's crystal lattice caused by enormous stress during formation. This creates microscopic structural distortions that selectively absorb certain wavelengths of light, resulting in pink color. Unlike blue (boron) or yellow (nitrogen), pink results from physical crystal structure changes rather than chemical impurities — making it scientifically unique. Do I need to purchase a diamond to receive a consultation?

No. Initial consultations are complimentary and without obligation. Our goal is education and building relationships. Many clients benefit from multiple consultations over months or years as they refine their understanding and preferences before making an acquisition.

What is the minimum investment for your services?

While we work with a range of budgets, our collection focuses on investment-grade rare diamonds. Custom sourcing can accommodate various budgets based on your criteria and objectives.

How do your prices compare to other dealers?

We price competitively based on current market values, auction results, and dealer networks. Our pricing is transparent — we provide detailed price justification including comparable sales and market analysis. We welcome informed comparison.

Can you help me sell a diamond I already own?

Yes. We offer evaluation and resale support services for exceptional diamonds, whether purchased through us or elsewhere. We facilitate connections with qualified buyers, auction houses, and international dealers to maximize value realization.

Do you work with clients outside the United States?

Yes. We serve clients worldwide via virtual consultations (Google Meet preferred) and fully insured international shipping. We accommodate consultations across all time zones. Hand delivery is available where possible for significant acquisitions.

How long does the sourcing process take?

For most criteria, 1-6 months. For exceptionally rare specifications (large Fancy Vivid blues, Argyle Tender pinks, Zimmi yellows), 6-24 months. We provide regular updates throughout the search and never compromise quality for speed.

Should I have my diamond set in jewelry?

Many investment-grade diamonds are set in high-quality jewelry, allowing enjoyment while preserving value. We recommend platinum or 18K gold settings that can be easily removed if future sale is desired. Setting costs typically represent 5-15% of stone value. Explore our jewelry design services.

Can rare diamonds be worn daily?

Yes. Diamonds are the hardest natural substance and highly resistant to scratching. Secure settings with regular annual inspections ensure safe daily wear. Many clients wear investment pieces regularly while maintaining comprehensive insurance coverage. See our care guide for detailed recommendations.
